AED: It’s all about a “Unified Creative Vision” to SUPERCHARGE A FAMILY and its Team by providing them with a GREATER PURPOSE for why the Business exists. Do they have a meaning beyond generating Profit? Is there something that gets them out of bed every morning and drives them to Positively Impact Others and Enhance the Human Experience? Have they taken the time to deeply understand what they were born to do? Leading-Edge Families clearly identify the role and importance of their Family in their respective Communities. ABOUT RE-IMAGINING LEGACY ASSETS
CY: You’ve worked on RE-ENVISIONING physical spaces and Long-Term Development Projects. What lessons from that work apply to Family Businesses trying to EVOLVE Legacy Assets without betraying their roots?
AED: Being TOO ROOTED IN THE PAST is often the root cause of the issue. We work actively with Commercial Office Buildings, and the greatest challenge we confront is owners now being faced with the challenge of their Business Model no longer working, which they’re experiencing after three decades or more of (Financial) success from their older, outdated Business Model. This is a lot to confront for a Family. It involves their Physical Assets and their Family Dynamics. The Now-Generation has long had the mindset of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Well, now, guess what? IT IS BROKE, and it forces the question: What Vision do we run with for the future because the Now-Generation has not entrusted the Next-Generation to lead with their ideas … ever? This is where GCO acts as a Bridge Builder for these Families to help CREATE THE TRANSFORMATION of various dynamics from Building & Operating Strategy to Empowering the Next-Generation and helping to establish a clear sense of direction with a “Unified Creative Vision” for both properties and the family.

CY: What have you seen work when founders want to EMPOWER the next generation but are afraid of losing control, relevance, or the ESSENCE of what they built?
AED: This is an extremely challenging process that our Clients resist because it is DEEPLY EMOTIONAL. I know it’s natural to want to keep emotion separate from the Business, but I find that to be impossible. You are talking about Family Dynamics and all the complications that come with them, from Legacy Assets losing value due to outdated strategies to New Family Members potentially being integrated into the mix via the Next-Generation. As a key first step to navigating this emotional work, I often call upon a TRUSTED THERAPIST who can help the Family overcome complicated emotional blocks that threaten to derail transformation and progress. Moving beyond these blocks is how we achieve our Concept of “The Psychology of Synergy” to align Generational Enterprises in the Boardroom and at Home and SUPERCHARGE PROFIT AND PURPOSE.
